Who pays for the Times Square crystal ball?

Filed under: Uncategorized — WECT @ 5:54 pm

A viewer emailed us our first question for “Ask WECT.”

No it is not a local question, BUT we said to ask us anything and we’d try to find the answer.

Here we go….

“From the first story on the Waterford crystal ball, I have been wondering…..with the economy being as it is, who paid for it?”

Here’s what we found out.

Our viewer is asking about the Times Square ball drop on New Year’s Eve.

From what we can find out the Times Square Alliance, which is a 501c3 corporation formed in 1992 is in charge of all things New Year’s Eve for the Times Square celebration.  It’s a non-profit entity.

A representative told us over the phone that part of the cost is split among the agency, sponsors and the owners of the building, One Time Square.   They didn’t put a dollar figure on the cost.
